An impressive dune
The dune is the result of the erosion of mountain ranges, wind and dense vegetation. Over the years, sand is carried inland by the wind and accumulates when it hits vegetation to form a dune.
Located at the entrance to the Arcachon basin, the dune du Pilat consists of about 60 million m³ of sand. Known for its exceptional size, the dune is also known for the diversity and beauty of its natural environment. Indeed, the dune is more than 2.9 km long and 616 m wide.
Between ocean and forest, the dune is highly exposed to the wind. As a result, the slope on the ocean side is gentle and on the forest side the slope is steep. Year after year, the dune encroaches a little more on the forest that borders it because of the wind. The dune du Pilat is a large classified site in order to preserve it as much as possible.
Access to the dune is free. Only parking is charged. You will find all the information you need for your visit on the site of the Dune du Pilat.
